Abstract

Changes in musculoskeletal and nervous system with aging exert deleterious effects on walking ability. Stride length and
gait velocity decrease in elders, whereas cadence is usually not changed. In addition, double support time increases, and
the angles of hip extension, knee extension and ankle plantarflexion decrease. In elderly fallers, peak hip flexion moment
increases in stance phase, whereas peak hip extension and knee flexion moment as well as knee power absorption decrease in pre-swing phase. Based on these characteristics, rehabilitative strategies for strengthening weakened muscles, stretching tight muscles such as hip flexor and knee flexor, and improving balance can be applied in clinical field.
